Testing and Addressing Adrenal Fatigue: A Functional Approach


A common strategy for evaluating adrenal health—such as the one used in the Kalish Method (my mentor)—involves monitoring how your stress hormones fluctuate throughout the day. This is typically done through a four-point saliva test, which provides a snapshot of your body’s natural cortisol rhythm.


Samples are collected at key intervals: shortly after waking, midday, late afternoon, and before bed. These allow practitioners to track how your cortisol levels rise and fall, offering insight into whether your adrenal glands are functioning optimally. In most cases, DHEA is also measured, giving a broader picture of your hormonal balance.


If imbalances are detected—whether your cortisol output is excessive, blunted, or erratic—a customized treatment plan is developed. This often includes adaptogenic herbs like holy basil or rhodiola, along with targeted nutrients that support adrenal repair and hormone regulation. The goal is to support your body in naturally producing adequate levels of cortisol and DHEA once again.


In some cases, other hormones like pregnenolone or testosterone may be assessed and supported based on the individual’s needs.
