Harnessing Neuroplasticity - Part 3: Advanced Techniques and Sustaining Change

Mastering Your Mind: Advanced Techniques to Sustain Positive Brain Changes

In the third installment of our series on neuroplasticity, we explore advanced techniques to deepen and sustain the positive changes in our brain wiring, ensuring that these new pathways are robust and durable.

Technique 1: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a formal way of applying what we’ve discussed: identifying, challenging, and replacing negative thoughts. Working with a therapist can provide structured guidance and deeper insights into your thought patterns, reinforcing the new neural pathways you are trying to establish.

Technique 2: Habit Stacking

Habit stacking involves adding new, beneficial habits to existing ones. For example, if you already have a morning routine like drinking coffee, stack a new habit of doing something right after it like meditating, journaling, focusing on goals, positive outcomes, stating affirmations, prayer or walking. Linking new habits to those already cemented in your daily life can make them easier to adopt and maintain.

Technique 3: Environmental Changes

Sometimes, changing your environment can support changes in your brain. This might mean setting up a peaceful area in your home for relaxation, or it could involve spending more time in nature. These changes can reinforce feelings of calm and well-being, supporting the neuroplastic changes you’re trying to make. You may also change your environment to support a goal like a promotion by dressing for the role you want to be promoted to, and adding imagery to an area of your house or office to support this.

Technique 4: Regular Physical Activity

Exercise is not just for the body. It profoundly impacts the brain, releasing endorphins that reduce stress and anxiety. Even moderate physical activity like walking can help strengthen the new, positive neural pathways you are building.

Walking also has the added benefit of being a Bilateral stimulating movement, meaning it activates both hemispheres of the brain. This helps the brain unpack and process thoughts, feelings and even helps with problem solving.

Neuroplasticity offers a hopeful perspective on our ability to influence our mental health and overall well-being. By employing both basic and advanced techniques to rewire our brains, we can transform our thought patterns, behaviors, and life experiences. Remember, the journey of rewiring your brain is ongoing. Regular practice and commitment to these techniques can create lasting changes, leading to a healthier, happier you.
